Dermaroller or microneedling therapy is a fantastic anti-ageing treatment that can be used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the skin as well as improve the appearance of scars. It involves rolling a cylindrical device that has lots of tiny microneedles studded on its surface over the skin, which stimulates the body’s repair mechanisms to produce new collagen. A course of 3-6 treatments is recommended to see maximal benefits.
When a dermaroller/microneedling device is passed over the skin, small fine needles penetrate into the skin creating controlled injury without damaging the epidermis (top layer of the skin). This leads to minimal superficial pinpoint bleeding and activates the bodies healing mechanisms through the release of various growth factors.
Within 5 days, a fibronectin matrix forms which results in:
- formation of new blood vessels in the skin
- increase collagen deposition
- increased elastin deposition
The net effect is a skins tightening effect which lasts as long as 5–7 years. Studies have shown that 4 sessions of dermaroller/microneedling spaced 1 months apart can lead to a 400% increase in the amount of collagen and elastin in the skin at 6 months.
The action of the needles also helps to break down any scarred areas of the skin, which allows collagen fibres to remodel, reducing the appearance of scars.
The small channels that form within the skin during treatment also enhances the delivery of medications such as minoxidil for hair loss, and skin creams as they are able to bypass the skin barrier, and reach the dermis directly.
The effectiveness of a dermaroller/microneedling treatment is dependent on the needle length and the technique used. Home dermaroller/microneedling devices have a short needle length (normally 0.25 – 1.0mm) and therefore cannot produce the rejuvenation effect as they do not penetrate deep enough to reach the dermis of skin.
In comparison, professional dermaroller/microneedling devices have sterile surgical grade needles that range between 1.5 – 5mm in length, therefore they can penetrate deep enough to induce collagen production. Furthermore, they must only be used by a qualified medical in a clean and safe environment to minimise any risk of infection or scarring.
